Electric Vehicle Myths in Indian Market

Myth#1 Low Battery Life and charging issues

The batteries used in electric cars are generally top-notch and made to last a long time. Batteries come with 5 to 8-year guarantees from many manufacturers. The battery life might not be a concern with the presence of these manufacturers. According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, electric vehicle sectors can be charged from 0% to 80% in between 1 to 5 hours using slow & moderate chargers. In contrast, rapid chargers may charge electric vehicles in less than an hour. With the aid of the rapid chargers currently on the market, certain electric vehicles can charge from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes.

Myth#2 Environmental effects of Electric vehicles

EVs do not have vehicle exhaust that emits pollutants. However, Electricity used in electric power vehicles also contributes to carbon pollution, but the degree depends directly on how the local power is sourced. By 2030, India aims to generate around 40% of its installed electric power capacity from sources other than fossil fuels. About 60% of the electrical energy from the grid can be converted by electric vehicles into power for the wheels. Only about 20% of the energy stored in fuel can be converted by conventional gasoline-powered vehicles into power for the wheels.

Myth#3 Vehicle Slowness & poor range

In reality, electric vehicles are usually faster than fuel-powered vehicles. This is so because an electric motor quickly generates all available torque (instant torque). An electric vehicle's acceleration pedal is depressed, and the vehicle quickly moves from rest to speed.

The average range of electric 2-wheelers, according to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, is about 84 km per charge. The market's electric cars typically range 150–200 km per charge. According to their report, this range is considered sufficient for daily travel inside a city.

Myth#4 Poor Electric Vehicle infrastructure

There are currently 934 charging stations in India, and more public and commercial suppliers are joining the market. The government has taken steps to ensure that the penetration of public charging infrastructure continues to rise.

By 2022, India has pledged to have 175 GW of installed Renewable Energy (RE) capacity and up to 450 GW by 2030. Over the previous few years, the country's weighted average emission factor for the national grid has remained steady at 0.82 tCO2 / MWh (as of 2018-19). The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) altered the Model Building Byelaws (MBBL) 2016 to include the provision of electric vehicle charging in buildings that fulfill specific criteria.
